But I digress ...

So Here's One of My Major Issues With Teh Church

The Roman Catholic Church has the potential to be a force for good. I really believe that. But then their agents go and do stupid $#17 like this.

A girl is abused by her stepfather and conceives twins in a uterus that could not contain either.

The logical outcome of allowing this pregnancy to proceed is pain and death for the girl, and the death of both kids.

Doctors save one of those lives by performing a simple procedure, an abortion, availble in strongly Catholic Brazil only in cases of a) rape, and b) threat to the life of the mother, both conditions the girl met.

The reaction of The Roman Catholic Stupid-to-the-nth-Power-for-Christ Archbishop in the area? Excommunicate everyone involved. Cut them off from their spiritual support when they made what should have been an easy choice: To save a life.

And why? Because "life is sacred." Just not, apparently, the lives of nine-year-old rape victims.

Yeah, she was nine. Didn't I mention that?

But Metro... Life IS sacred!

That is, until it fits on my BBQ.

This kind of malarkey is why I left the church 40 years ago. This, and the hellfire and brimstone sermon the priest preached at my Dad's funeral, are why I stay away.

Buon Giorno, Signor M

This illustrates why I am a Protestant - we had to have a Reformation to free Real Christianity from the imprisonment by an arrogant & insensitive Catholicism that displaces the Good Lord's values with the Traditions of Men

Was the "Father" also excommunicated ?

@Hobbes:
Life is sacred until god arranges to have it nailed to a tree for telling people to be a bit nicer to one another and pay their taxes.

@silverstar:
Hellfire and brimstone at a funeral? Sufferin' jaysus, as the Newfies say. Nice way to send him off.

So you prefer the cult that split from the messianic cult that split off from the True Church of Judaism, eh?

Which one?--the one Luther started or the English variation? Henry VIII loathed Luther, as I'm certain you know, for his rejection of Catholicism.

Of course, Henry himself had some traditions he wished to perpetuate that the Catholic Church wouldn't allow. So he substitued the Traditions of Man for ecclesiastical approval (aka the Will of God) and did away with the Old Boss, creating the ancestor of what is known in North America as the Anglican Catholic Church (since the Episcopal split in 1970 or so).

Just pointing out that one man's True Christianity is another's apostasy. Though not mine. Atheists recognize no infidels.

Note that the father was not excommunicated. The doctors were and the mother and even the nurses. But the man who raped a little girl? He's fine.
