Clearly the Writer's Dental Work Was Picking up the Ambulance Dispatch System
The Australian Broadcasting Corp. has apologized over a comedy show that apparently mocks the ecstasy-related death of a teenager.
Update: Aerchie of the Archive notes in the comments that filming on this series was in fact finished a week prior to the sad death of Annabel Catt. As he observes, clearly, "this is one of 'those' co-incidences."
I find myself relieved.
The show, "Summer Heights High" is running five episodes which apparently find humour in the drug death of a teenager named "Annabel Dickinson".
But it's not getting any yuks out of the parents of Annabel Catt. From their statement:
“We and many others immediately drew the conclusion the episode was making a comparison to our beloved daughter,” they told the Manly Daily newspaper.--Via thewest.com.au
“This was done by naming the deceased in the show Annabel Dickson, describing her as blonde and beautiful and showing a picture that had a resemblance to our daughter.”
ABC Managing director Mark Scott described the co-incidence as "a horrible co-incidence". I am not buying it.
For starters, just out of pure curiosity: How common is the name "Annabel"?

Unfortunately this does seem to be one of "Those" coincidences.
Quoting from the ABC Online News, "Ms Catt says the family spoke with the ABC's managing director, Mark Scott, this morning.
She says the family asked for an apology, but now understands filming of the program finished 11 days before Annabel's death in February.
In a statement, Mr Scott says the public broadcaster was aware of the "horrible coincidence" and should have contacted the Catt family before it broadcast the show.
"We apologise that this has caused further distress to the family," he said.
"Unfortunately, as the series was already completely filmed and the production closed down, it was impossible to alter the name of the character."
Wow.
That is indeed a truly amazing co-incidence. I will update as soon as I can.
Thanks for the note!
I heard the show was filmed 3 weeks before the real girl died.
And drugs are bad, everyone knows that so i think its good that SHH shows how stupid people that take drugs are
@ Anonymous:
According to my source, namely the noteable Aerchie of the Archive, linked in the post, it was about a week.
And you're right: Drugs are bad. All those aspirin-poppers, cough-syrup-takers, and antibiotic-users don't get half the kicking around they deserve ... (sarcasm alert).
But whether you truly believe that story or not, it clearly makes for good prime-time storylines.
