Trouble In Reporting

From Editor & Publisher via Cliff Schecter

NEW YORK The great John Edwards-Ann Coulter feud took another turn on Friday, with the former senator calling the columnist/author a "she-devil" on a visit to Iowa.

Coulter had hurled a gay slur at Edwards earlier this year, and after more back and forth, his wife called her during a national TV appearance to ask some hard questions.

Edwards had reminded the crowd today in Burlington, Iowa, that his wife had challenged Coulter to stop "personal attacks." He continued: "We know these people. We know their game plan. They're going to attack us personally," Edwards said, according to an ABC report. "They attacked Elizabeth personally, because she stood up to that she-devil Ann Coulter."

Catching himself, he added: "I should not have name-called. But the truth is -- forget the names -- people like Ann Coulter, they engage in hateful language."

Clearly E&P has misunderstood the issue. Coulter didn't use a "gay slur". Being called gay is one of those insults that's like a drink: it affects one only if accepted. And the word "gay" itself is not a slur. Had Coulter said "John Edwards is gay" she would have been demonstrably, provably wrong, and she would have had to retract that remark, not because it was insulting, but because it was inaccurate.

But the words were chosen carefully, lest the harpy should have to eat them. What the shriek-speak Fantasy of the Fascists said was that she "was going to say a few words about John Edwards, but if you say the word 'faggot' you have to apologize" (I'm not sure of the wording, but I refuse to enter that dribbling loon's name into Google, lest it become more contaminated than it already is).

The issue was the word "faggot." In the mouth of the Coultergeist and her far-right-field friends it's supposed to be insulting, degrading, implying a lack of manliness. It also reveals their take on the minority they have been working so hard to alienate, disenfranchise, and assault.

Clearly they haven't been watching the performances of the Republican Party lately. Isn't Jeff Gannon manly? How about Mark Foley? Glenn Murphy? Or the endless other closet-case Repugnicans?

Of course, Coulter herself is very manly indeed, right down to the adam's apple and need to prove her machismo by using a word that is rapidly coming to sound like saying "negro" with two g's; well, in private, many of her supporters are quite fond of that word too, I'm sure.

So the issue here is about whether or not Edwards accurately described the beloved icon of hate as a "she-devil". I feel the terminology is wrong, and Edwards should reract it. The correct term is simply "devil". At least until some poor unfortunate soul sacrifices themself for the sake of biology by getting close enough to obtain a DNA sample to see whether she does in fact possess a second X chromosome.

However, Editor & Publisher owes the world an apology too, for calling Coulter an "author" and "columnist" without irony. I've tried to read bits of her books, and the hate-screed she writes could at best be described as the ravings of a deranged hag afflicted with the madness that accompanies late-stage syphillis. I'm considering a guide called "How to Read Coulter--If you absolutely must".

From Chapter One:
The best way to handle her books is to hang them on a nail in the outhouse.

Puir wee Miss C

"harpy ... shriek-speak Fantasy of the Fascists .... repugnicans ...
ravings of a deranged hag afflicted with the madness that accompanies late-stage syphilis... [speculation on whether Miss Coulter is a she .... DNA checking for a 2nd X Chromosome ...."

... errr ... beautifully wRitten ... but ... harrumphus ... hurrampha .... steady the ship ... is this the logic on which Evolutionism is built !?

The language is strangely (or should that be "strangley") familiar - is it resonant of the choice of language you are suggesting we should expect from Miss C - harrumphum

I ask in a spirit of pScientific enquiry (ummm "in-quiry" as our exColonists would express it)

Is it pScientific & sexist to discriminate against the expression "she-devil" - if we are to regard Miss C as a Devil, would this not imply that she (who is a she) would be a she-Devil

Peut-estre, je pense de trop about such choses .....

Yr obedt servt etc

Well-written and cogent as always, M. Eagle. And well spotted. My word choices are indeed vaguely Coulterish, though considerably more respectful, less eliminationist, and more measured than hers.

However, when it comes to a woman who has contributed to the general discourse such flaming cowpats as:

"I think the government should be spying on all Arabs, engaging in torture as a televised spectator sport, dropping daisy cutters wantonly throughout the Middle East and sending liberals to Guantanamo."

"[Canadians] better hope the United States does not roll over one night and crush them. They are lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent."

"The ethic of conservation is the explicit abnegation of man's dominion over the Earth. The lower species are here for our use. God said so: Go forth, be fruitful, multiply, and rape the planet — it's yours. That's our job: drilling, mining and stripping. Sweaters are the anti-Biblical view. Big gas-guzzling cars with phones and CD players and wet bars — that's the Biblical view."

Oh and of course:
"My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times Building."

I think I can dispense with civility. She's a loonball, and the more dangerous for the fact that her best friends have paid for her to get a bully pulpit to rage and curse at all that might have been good in the ruins of America.

I appreciate that there are some people one must engage in sensible debate without name-calling, and I honestly try to work that way.

Coulter deserves to be ridden out of town on a rail, preferably all the way to Bagdhad, where she can explain to Iraqis exactly what she meant by some of her stupider statements.

Sure, she's a showperson. I'm dead certain it's mostly an act, to guarantee her her future income when she's old and has no loved ones to support her. But if that's the case then she's stupidly irresponsible.

If she really believes the crap she spews, she's considerably worse.

Alas, she is ranting in the same way the band played as the Titanic de-surfaced. Only the blind, blinkered and bloody stupid still see America as a world leader. They are now being led around by the nose by those dreaded communist orientals who have bought up the US$ from all around the world and now have greater holdings of the currency than the Fed does. The US is now China's puppet. They just haven't realised it yet. Wait for about four years! The Witchcoulter's and Revdphelps and the Michigan Milita's are going to self-combust in right-wing rage when someone lets them know about the real situation!

I did see her recently referred to as "Ann Cthoulter" which I thought apt.

Bonjour, M Metro

Did she really say each & every remark ? If yes, this Lady would make this Korrekt-Wing Eagle seem almost reasonable ....

It is of course quite hypocritical for this Eagle to criticize the language of the youthful M Metro et his equally youthful friends [Her Grace the Marchioness R-C et la wondering N-Amerikan WildHund und our Senior Mentor Herr Aerchie), who (so encouragingly) are so eager to stand for Truth, Justice & Mercy

The peril is that one sub-consciously takes on the nasty anger of one's opponents

I have the honour to remain your obedt servt etc

PS How is the much-missed Philipa

I like to think that Coulter and her like provide a sort of homeopathic outlet for the poisonous hatred that might otherwise build up in us correct-wingers and turn us into something like themselves.

Of course, by acting as lightning rods for the righteous anger of the civilized world, they also ensure that George Dubya and friends will never ingest the full dose of their own poisons they so desperately deserve.

Good for everyone, I suppose.
